A NEW SOUND OF AN OLD INSTRUMENT ****
ELPMAS ****
SAX PAX FOR A SAX ***
KopfRecords

Latterday recordings of legendary blind itinerant musician/composer who died last year.

Though already celebrated in underground and avant-garde circles for his singular Output in earlier decades, Louis T Hardin's musical vision really came of age when he reached his sixties. Discovering a spiritual home on In Europe (1978), he unfurled a subdued reflective piece suitably Nordic in theme and revisiting his teenage study of the Viola and Violin, A New Sound (1979) features wonderfully delicate improvisations on pipe organ, sprung with surprise and mischief. Back in America he made Elpmas (1991), a fiery protest against ecological outrage and treatment of Aboriginal people that blends Native American rhythms and swing jazz to heart-surging effect, Sax Etc, recorded in London in 1997, was a tribute to the instrument's inventor, Adolphe Sax, a final inspired departure with dedications to Charlie Parker and Lester Young, featuring rollicking choir and a 10-strong horn section.
Immense.
