The composer calls his saxophone project Sax Pax, underlining that in this case the saxophones are not to be linked with military bands for which the instruments originally had been intended, but are used exclusively for peaceful purposes.
Pax like peace or packs, meaning different sized groups within the ensemble, the first "pack" involves 4 saxes, as in Single Foot, the second one using 5 saxes, as in Sandalwood, then seven saxes, as in New Amsterdam, nine saxes in Novette No.1, and so on.
Since Louis Hardin is deeply impressed with the achievements of the intrument-builder Antoine Joseph (called Adolphe) Sax who built his first saxophone during the period of 1840/41 he wants to commemorate the centennial of A. Sax´s death (Febr. 4th. ´94) with this CD.
All the pieces are part of a series which the composer calls ZAJAZ, "jazz" in two directions, like a Janus-head showing two faces. There is one looking backwards into the past, represented by classical techniques of composing and the other face turn towards the future which is characterized by a new kind of combining old and new elements of music.
Music which sounds like jazz, sometimes like real wild improvisations as in Present for the Prez., but is in fact classically conceived, written in the form of chaconne. Most of the pieces are written in canon form, having up to 36 voices as in Well Well Dukel, which has not been recorded yet.
The core of the ensemble which has been founded by the leading British saxophonist John Harle are the members of the meanwhile well established Apollo Saxophone Quartet who won important music competitions at home and abroad like the Tokyo International Chamber Music Competition in 1992. Also involved were David Lord as producer, and other big names of British music world, like Peter Hammill and Andrew Davis (former Stackridge member) singing, of Danny Thompson, former Pentangle co-founder, with his contra bass, named Victoria, being especially featured on "D For Danny" which Loius Hardin dedicated to his long-time friend.
The piano solos were played by Nicola Meecham, teacher at the Royal Academy Of Music.

TO A. SAX

In Sax's name I'd like to know
just what Rollini, Parker, Young and mo'e
musicians would have done if there
had never been a saxophone to blow.

I keep on writing for sopranos,
altos, tenors, baritones and bass
but not for sopraninos, for
they're too-too out of tune to have a place.

As much as I would like to use
the contra bass, the bass is in the way,
condemning me for wanting to
allow the lowest of the low to play.

I'd like to use them both together,
but the bass would argue, "Either or,
and if you could accept my good
advice, the contra bass you should ignore."

'C melody' would be the only
sax I heard at first, and it was played
by Bessy Heiner at a dance
in Old Wyoming, when I should have stayed.

NEW AMSTERDAM
New Amsterdam was her name
before she was New York
New Amsterdam is a dame
the heart and soul of big apple city.

No matter what name she goes under
I dig her deeply
and no wonder
for she's been lovely to me
and I'm the better
for having met her.

SHAKESPEARE CITY
Shakespeare city, we're in love with you,
all because you took his name.
Who but you enshrined his last remains,
for all the globe to honour.
The name you bear is there for all to see.
As you like it,
so does he.
We're to hear Hamlet at the rose,
to be or not to be.
